Youth leaders in Boy Scouting and Venturing receive leadership training within their Troops and Crews.
Boy Scouting is a program for boys, led by boys, and administered by adults. For Boy Scouts, this includes ILST (Introduction to Leadership Skills for Troops).
Venturing is a program for youth, led by youth, and administered by youth. For Venturers, ALPS Training prepares youth members of the Crew to lead and administer the Venturing program.
Youth leaders serving as Den Chiefs may complete an online orientation and receive in-person training to expand their skills. Training is recommended for all Den Chiefs, and is required to earn the Den Chief Service Award.
"National Youth Leadership Training is an exciting, action-packed program designed for councils to provide youth members with leadership skills and experience they can use in their home Troops and Crews and in other situations demanding leadership of self and others.
The NYLT course centers around the concepts of what a leader must BE, what he must KNOW, and what he must DO. The key elements are then taught with a clear focus on HOW TO. The skills come alive during the week as the patrol goes on a Quest for the Meaning of Leadership."
NYLT is offered once per year in Pine Tree Council.
In Scouting, members are considered "Youth" until their 21st birthday. Venturers over the age of 18 and under age 21 may participate in Wood Badge.
Youth leaders who complete NYLT may continue their training through the National Advanced Youth Leadership Experience (NAYLE).
